Shona sculptures impress, stimulate, and inspire. The sculptor, Oliver Jonah (last picture) and his team at St. Mary's, Chitungwezi near Harare, carved the about 9" (230mm) long and 6" (150mm) tall stone bookends sculpture from a solid piece or raw soapstone (steatite) known locally as Rapoko. He skillfully captured and detailed the endangered black rhinoceros. His painstaking attention to detail will be appreciated and admired by all who see them.

Admired by Picasso and many other artists and sculptors, many critics view Shona sculptors to be the world’s current era of greatest rock artists and sculptors. Being hand carved from raw stone, no two bookend sculptures, however similar, by the same sculptor are identical.

This magnificent example of the Shona talent often sells for more than $350 in USA, EU, and Asian art galleries. We are able to offer them at moderate prices by contracting directly with the sculptor at fair trade prices. A notarized certificate of authenticity, origin, and appraised value is available for a small additional charge and recommended for insurance purposes.
