From the Matopos, Zimbabwe a beautiful and unique hand carved 'Big Five' wildlife design relief wall plaque. Carved from a solid piece of Mukwa wood with great color, hue, and grain the Ndebele artist skillfully captures with great detail Africa's famous big five (Cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhinoceros). His painstaking attention to detail will be appreciated and admired by all who see the plaque. The elephant tusks are soft deciduous wood.
The 14" (355mm) tall plaque makes an excellent home décor or ornament/trophy for wildlife collectors and an unique gift for almost anyone. Similar artifacts sell for about $100 in the USA. We are able to offer them at moderate prices by contracting directly with the carvers in Bulawayo at fair trade prices.
No two carved plaques, however similar in style, even by the same artist, are the same; each one is an original, unique, museum quality work of art. Being handcrafted from natural materials some minor imperfections may be anticipated that add rather than detract from the beauty of the plaque.
The Shona stone sculptors of Zimbabwe are world famous; however, there are many other talented artisans in the country, such as scrimshanders, producing a wide range of sustainable crafts and products that are both unique and original. These products are centered in Bulawayo and surrounding Ndebele tribal area in the west of the landlocked country. The plaques are imported under US Customs wood import regulations and inspected by USDA.
