Today, the attractive figurines are symbolic woodcarvings linking past generations of tradition, culture, and beliefs with the present. The Watusi are black, but they are not Negroes. The spectacularly tall, slender, and statuesque tribesmen are a proud Hamitic or Nilotic people who migrated to Rwanda-Urundi country over four centuries ago. Many grow to heights of seven feet or more. For more information, click here for detailed description of the couple.
Sourced from commercial orchards and plantations, tree cutting services, and exotic plant removal programs mostly exotic tree woods such as mango, jacaranda, or saligna gum (Eucalyptus saligna) are used as the carving media. Using sustainable and renewable wood resources lessens the impact on ebony forests that are decimated due to demand for carvings in this medium and help preserve the environment.
