SOUTH AFRICAN DOLL
SKU: D.BF.NM

Made by Gogo (grandmother), the beautiful, beaded, Ndebele-style, traditional modern dress African doll is a great gift for the collector, female friends, colleagues, and family. About 7½” (190mm) tall, young and old alike will be thrilled to receive them as a gift and the dolls are especially suited for those who are hard to buy for, irrespective of the occasion. For you they will be an excellent part of an African or cultural doll collection or décor / theme and a stimulating conversational piece at home or the office.

From Johannesburg, South Africa they represent the traditional dress and headdress style with jewelry accents in the current fashion choice of southern African women. They want to come to your house or office and join your collection. Usually selling for around $35 each in the USA and Europe, we are able to offer them at moderate prices by contracting directly with artisans at fair trade prices.

Many modern African women are fond of personal adornment and bright color and geometric prints whilst others like uniform simple plain colors to represent their religion or social club. The pairs of side and front profile photographs are generic, with the first pair (A) showing a rural or urbanized pentecostal African woman in a uniform plain color outfit, the second pair (B) show a typical modern rural Mosotho/Tswana/Pedi woman in vibrant colors and geometric pattern fabric, and the third pair (C) show a modern city or urbaized African woman.

Hand made by grandmothers, the backbone of African society (and often the sole breadwinner), and young girls in their care. Grandmas play an even greater role in the AIDS pandemic by raising, caring for, and nurturing a generation of orphans (not always family related) and the many ill adults. The income from these dolls is often their sole source of additional income other than social security that is currently about $120/month at October 2009 exchange rates.

These stunning examples of African talent and art are unique in that no two are the same, however, similar the style and size. Satisfaction is guaranteed! If you wish to personally select a specific doll or dolls then complete the box I want to choose above the "add to Shopping Cart" button with “YES” or “Y” and we will send you by e-mail (for a nominal fee to cover labor) five photographs or total doll inventory whichever is the least amount, for you to make your selection.

Should the dolls be sold out, the quantity reads backordered (instead of a number) for that specific type. A similar product can be ordered (click on the backordered link for details). If backorder not wanted, remove the item/s from the shopping cart or at checkout.

The artisans have a well-stocked inventory and the talented people welcome wholesale orders.
