FALL HAS ARRIVED IN AFRICA! (JUST A REMINDER THE SEASONS ARE REVERSED TO USA)
You are donating a blanket for an AIDS orphan or patient in one of the community owned and organized grass-roots projects that we support in eastern and southern Africa. For your generous donation, the recipient will receive a fleece blanket as shown in the pictures (or similar). Orphans receive a blanket in a carry-sleeve to take to their own or guardian’s home overnight. After recipients receive a blanket, photographs (if permission is received) are published on our website along with the list of donors.
In 2005, 42 blankets were distributed to those most in need and still being used in 2007 at Kwaze-Kwasa (Kathlehong see picture 4). 100 were distributed from funds raised in 2006 to Kwaze-Kwasa (Kathlehong picture 3). 25 were given to Patrick Chamusso (Catch A Fire) and Conney Thibedi’s Two Sister’s orphan care project (picture 2) in White River and 75 to one of South Africa’s premier care organizations Cotlands (pictures 5 and 6) early 2007, respectively.
Blankets were to be distributed in Zimbabwe in 2008 where they have great needs and probably the most distressed part of Africa along with Darfur, Somalia, and the eastern DRC (Congo). Political unrest and violence prevented the distribution along with the Government's ban on NGOs in the run up to the March and June elections. Conditions in Zimbabwe deteriorated further and exacerbated with Cholera epidemic.
Hopes for the unity government in Zimbabwe have made slight improvements and conditions are better with the Cholera epidemic declining. 50 Blankets were made (Picture 7) by fashion tailors co-operative (started by Mathew Mabhonzo in 1984 [born 1933]) based at Mbare Hostel shop number 1. Most members of the co-operative are veteransof the First Chimurenga and all are 65+years in age. Needy and deserving babies and infants inominanted by the grass roots community program Tinevimbo Care Group, Mbare township received blankets in September 2009. 2010 blankets will also go to this group.
PLEASE NOTE BLANKETS ARE DISTRIBUTED MARCH THRUOGH MAY IN AFRICA'S AUTUMN/FALL TO PREPARE THE BABIES FOR THEIR WINTER.
