The artists’ call this style “shadow elephant with detail”. From behind (and afar) the carving looks like the very popular shadow elephant sculptures. On close inspection one finds an abstract elephant with some detail that bears no resemblance to the typical 'shadow' style and is a very subtle abstract rendition of an elephant walking. The sculptor carved the about 5” tall abstract stone sculpture from a solid piece or raw red soapstone known locally as Jasper; skillfully capturing and enshrining the majesty and mystique of the world’s largest land mammal.
This magnificent example of the Shona talent often sells for more than $75 in USA, EU, and Asian art galleries. We are able to offer them at moderate prices by contracting directly with the artisan at fair trade prices.
Admired by Picasso and many other artists and sculptors, many critics view Shona sculptors to be the world’s current era of greatest rock artists and sculptors. Being hand carved from raw stone, no two sculptures, however similar, are identical.
